COMMON HVAC MISTAKES HOMEOWNERS MAKE AND HOW TO AVOID THEM THIS SUMMER

Spring arrived on March 20th and summer will be here before we know it! Before temperatures start to climb, get your HVAC system checked to make sure it’s running as efficiently as possible when you need it most. Careful installation and maintenance are key to having your system run at peak cooling efficiency during the warm months ahead.

Although most homeowners in Westchester and Putnam have the best intentions when it comes to maintaining and operating their HVAC system, mistakes can be made that will shorten the system’s lifespan, have it run inefficiently, and waste money as a result. The pros at Robison want to ensure this doesn’t happen to you! Here we share some of the most common HVAC mistakes homeowners make — and how to avoid them.

  1. Installing the wrong size A/C: An AC unit that’s too small for your home may not be able to keep up with your demands, forcing it to work harder and use more energy. An oversized AC unit will cycle on and off in short bursts, known as “short-cycling,” which can result in lower humidity and accurate temperature control. The constant on/off cycling also stresses your HVAC system, causing it to wear out prematurely.

  2. Failing to clean/replace air filters: Dirt and grime can build up in the HVAC filters, affecting the airflow and causing the parts to operate inefficiently. Failing to clean the air filters can also cause a lot of dust and contaminants to circulate within your home, affecting your indoor air quality and exposing you and your family to health hazards. Changing filters regularly can also increase energy efficiency, reduce cost, and add years of life to your system.

  3. Installing outdoor coils near obstructions: In order for your air conditioner to do its job, it needs strong, unrestricted airflow from all sides. However, outdoor condensers that are placed in an area that doesn’t allow for adequate airflow means your A/C won’t be able to produce nearly as much cold air as it would otherwise be able to.

  4. Allowing coils to get dirty: Dirt and debris can build up on air conditioning coils, preventing the unit from operating at max efficiency. Cleaning the coils using a stream of low-pressure water is safest; washes using alkaline or acids are sometimes used but can damage coils.

  5. Tackling duct problems alone: Ducts are usually hidden away inside an attic or small crawlspaces. Over time, they can become damaged or clogged, resulting in sluggish system performance. While some homeowners attempt to deal with duct problems on their own, it’s best to call in the pros who have the proper tools and training to do the necessary repairs correctly.

  6. Ignoring leaks: Think of drinking from a straw that has holes in it; little of your drink makes it to your mouth because much of it leaked through the holes. This is a concept similar to leaks in an air duct system; airflow in your home will be compromised and diminished. This can affect your home’s level of comfort and cause the unit to work harder than necessary. Robison professionals can identify and repair all gaps and holes to reduce your energy usage and your electricity bill.
