CAN I GET A TAX CREDIT FOR USING BIOFUEL IN WESTCHESTER & PUTNAM COUNTIES?

If you're a homeowner in Westchester or Putnam County, NY, you might be wondering about the benefits of switching to biofuel for heating your home. We at Robison offer an exclusive B20 biofuel blend that not only provides numerous benefits but also qualifies our customers for tax credits. Let's dive into the details!

Understanding B20 Biofuel and Its Benefits

B20 Biofuel is a blend made with 80% regular heating oil and 20% biodiesel (that's where the 20 in B20 comes from). B20 Biofuel is predominantly sourced from domestically grown soybeans. This blend, known as B20, burns cleaner than regular heating oil, is renewable, and reduces the United States' dependence on foreign oil.

Here are some additional advantages of using B20 biofuel, as opposed to oil derived from fossil fuels:

  • No need for modifications to your burner or tank.

  • It naturally lubricates your heating system.

  • It produces similar or even superior heat to conventional heating oil.

  • Studies indicate that B20 biofuel performs just as well as, if not better than, conventional heating oil.

  • The performance standards for B20 biofuel have been approved by ASTM International, which sets industry standards for fuels and lubricants.

New York State's Clean Heating Fuel Credit

Yes, you can get a tax credit for using biofuel in your heating system! NY state offers a one cent per gallon direct tax credit for every percent of biodiesel used to heat your home.

With Robison’s adoption of a B20 biofuel blend, you will get a 20-cent per gallon direct tax credit for every gallon of fuel delivered to you throughout the year. For example, if you use 1,000 gallons per year to heat your home, you will receive a $200 NYS tax credit.

You might be wondering how you document your B20 usage and how to provide that documentation to the state. Every January, we send an email containing your annual usage of B20 Biofuel and a link to Form IT-241. Simply fill out the form with the consumption data when you file your state taxes.

The Inflation Reduction Act and Energy Efficiency

The recently passed federal Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) includes a provision to incentivize the efficiency of heating oil equipment while increasing the amount of biodiesel blended into the fuel.

The IRA provides homeowners with a $600 federal tax credit for B20-compatible furnaces and boilers that meet or exceed 2021 Energy Star efficiency criteria. This is something to consider if you are in the market for a new heating system.

Making a Difference with Biofuel

At Robison, we are proud to be among the first companies in the region offering B20 biofuel. We are committed to ensuring energy efficiency for our neighbors and promoting sustainability for a healthier planet. Our early adoption of B5 and subsequently B10, and now B20, goes beyond the current NYS-mandated requirement in preparation for the 2030 B20 mandate.
